5 Tips for Better Respect from Your Student

Posted: July 12, 2017

Respect is an essential skill for leaders in today's world though one that we see less and less of. We want all of our students to strive each day to be a more respectful individual. If you're in our ATA Leadership Program you know we start with respecting ourselves, then others, then society and the world.

Today we want to give you five tips for making sure your child strives to be a more respectful individual.

Do Hard Things - When you strive for a goal that is hard it forces you to work harder and learn more about your abilities. You respect yourself more when you do things that are hard and have the perseverance to finish strong. One of the best ways for our students to do this is to set their goal for Black Belt. No one ever achieved their Black Belt and though less of themselves for it!

At What Age Can You Start Martial Arts?

Posted: July 05, 2017

One of the most common questions people have when they start investigating martial arts is what ages students can start. Because martial arts isn't as prevalent in many communities as activities like dance and baseball parents often find themselves spending some time finding out about the basics of what it means to get involved in a martial arts program.

Most martial arts schools have a variety of kids programs as well as adult programs. Here at ATA Excellence Martial Arts we offer two different kids programs as well as our adult program for our core program. The first of these programs is our ATA Tiger class. We offer this program for students ages 4 to 6.

The ATA Tiger program focus on teaching the core concepts of martial arts with an emphasis on life skills training as well as basic physical coordination and fitness. Children in this program will learn many of the same skills as our older students but at a slower pace and will spend more time working on the basics. It's understood by parents that the goal of our ATA Tiger program is first to teach respect, discipline, and confidence while encouraging fitness, coordination and self-defense.

Respect is Not What You Know, It's What You Do

Respect isn't just an awesome song by Aretha Franklin it's something we all want to have. The martial arts is known for teaching respect. You see it in the bowing, titles for instructors, and saying "yes sir." But when we talk about respect at ATA Excellence Martial Arts we're talking about more then just the things people say. We tell our students that respect is not what you know, it's what you do!

This is a powerful message that we try to instill in every one of our students. Today's society talks a lot about respect but we don't see the fruits of that respect in the way people interact, treat their body, talk online, or how they engage in their communities. At our school we want our students to do more than just talk about respect. We want them to SHOW respect.

Living a life of respect is about more than saying please and thank you. Of course that's a good start but we need to look at how we treat our bodies. We model starting with the way we respect ourselves. Do you (and your family) eat healthy? Do you exercise regularly? Do you practice positive self-talk and encouragement? We can't show others proper respect without making sure we show respect to ourselves.
